"Mindfulness is paying attention to your life, here and now, with kindness and curiosity." (Amy Saltzman)
How self-aware do you think you are? Do you ever feel like you become dizzy from reacting to the world around you? How often do you manage to 'pause' before reacting to something that someone said, or did?
Our focus on mindfulness will provide us with an opportunity to gain insight into the ways in which we react to our inner and outer lives. We will also experiment with different mindfulness exercises - with the focus being on increasing our awareness of our thoughts, physical sensations and our environment.
On Wednesday we will be travelling through the city, experimenting with meditating surrounded by serenity along with the chaos of everyday life. We will journey to St Kilda, observing mindfulness in motion before joining Anselm Van Rood, a local artist, in a special drawing meditation workshop. If there is time, a visit to the seaside will happen :)
Buddhism and Islam Trail: Travel to the Carlton Mosque and Melbourne Buddhist Centre to find out more about these two religions.
Part 1: Many communities in Melbourne hold Islam as their faith, including people from Turkey, Asia, the Middle-East and Africa, yet there is still much misunderstanding about the nature of Islamic belief and practice. Who was Mohammed? Why are there no pictures of people or gods in Mosques? Why do Muslims face East when they pray? We will visit the Carlton Mosque to hear about Islam in Melbourne and Islamic religious practice.
Part II: Buddhism was the fastest growing religion in Australia at the end of the 20th Century. This is partly due to migration of Buddhist peoples from Asia, but also because a high number of Anglo-Celtic (“white”) Australians are adopting it as a belief system. Why would this be? And is Buddhism a religion, or just a philosophy? Was Buddha a god, or just a man? On this trail we will visit the Melbourne Buddhist Centre to learn about Buddhism in Melbourne and to experience the major spiritual practice of Buddhists: meditation.
Music Therapy
Music is an often overlooked medium as a valid form of communication and of human expression. We will be attending a music therapy workshop at melbourne Uni to learn about how music can help our mental wellbeing, as well as allow us express ourselves in an entirely different way. Songwriting and improvisation will be two of the exercises we will focus on. Final part of the trail will be observing the various types of music that Melbourne CBD has to offer and surveying in the public as to the effect of music on them. Finally, we will reflect on our own appreciation of music.
In pairs, decide on two religions to research. One must be either Buddhism or Islam. The other you may choose. Use the aspects of religion sheet to help you divide the research for the two religions between the two of you. You may wish to each study one religion and report back or each compare half the amount of aspects for each religion.
Use the sheet provided to record your findings and use the books provided, the websites listed below and your own research skills to find the answers. Find out as much as you can in the time provided. If you come across something curious or confusing, make a note/record your question.
When you have finished researching, discuss with your partner the similarities and differences between the two religions. You are looking to compare and contrast. Fill in the Venn diagram with your findings.
You and your partner will make a two minute presentation on your findings so be prepared to speak about;
- A short intro to each religion - The key similarities & differences of the two religions - Two curious aspects or questions you have about each religion
